The Oilers have placed Devon Levi on injured reserve and recalled Matt Tomkins from the Bakersfield Condors under emergency conditions.

The team announced the moves Friday, and Bob Stauffer reposted the update.

Levi is listed with an undisclosed injury and is expected to be out until at least Oct. 26.

Emergency conditions tells you everything. Edmonton didn't plan for this, and now it has to lean on the goalie whose name keeps popping up in trade pitches.

It's like your designated driver getting sick the night of the big party. Somebody else has to grab the keys.

Tristan Jarry is expected to start Saturday against Toronto, according to Oilers Access.

The veteran sits at .873 on a $5,375,000 cap hit.

Edmonton's crease takes an unexpected turn as Oilers place Devon Levi on injured reserve

Levi had 6 wins in seven appearances, with a .887 save percentage.

Two of those wins came in overtime and a shootout.

Jarry has 2 wins in three appearances, plus an overtime loss.

Tomkins gives Edmonton a backup option for at least the Toronto game.

The Oilers host Toronto on Saturday and Detroit on Monday, then Calgary on Wednesday.

Edmonton is 8-1-1, though just 3-1-1 at home.

The Oilers are still perfect on the road at 5-0-0.

Connor McDavid has 31 points, and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored in his season debut Thursday.

Leon Draisaitl has 21 points.

Vasily Podkolzin has 7 goals, including 2 game-winners.

Jason Dickinson remains out until at least Oct 28.

Toronto arrives on a three-game winning streak, with Auston Matthews at 18 points.

The Leafs recalled Cole McWard and Dakota Mermis this week with injury issues of their own on defense.

Anthony Stolarz sits at .898 for Toronto, while Sergei Bobrovsky is at .895.

Mike Babcock now has to manage a goalie change in the same week Mattias Ekholm was helped off the ice.

Can Jarry turn this into a statement game?

The Oilers didn't ask for this test. Jarry gets the chance to show he's more than a name on somebody's trade wish list.
