The Red Wings are still taking calls on Dylan Larkin and Simon Edvinsson, and Detroit knows exactly what it wants back.
Elliotte Friedman reported on Saturday Headlines that the club has been asking about young centers, “either in the NHL or not yet there.”
That's a clear shopping list. Shawn Horcoff wants a long-term piece down the middle, not a quick fix.
Larkin still wants out, and he has just five points through nine games.
His $8,700,000 cap hit doesn't make the math any simpler for buyers.
Edvinsson is the more delicate call. The big defenseman is only 23 and was drafted sixth overall.
Trading him for a young center swaps one future piece for another. With Larkin, Detroit is trying to turn an unhappy veteran into one.
Saturday's loss in Calgary adds urgency to the Red Wings' shopping
Saturday night didn't help. The Red Wings fell 4-1 in Calgary, ending a five-game point streak.
They're 4-4-3 and 23rd overall, with Edmonton waiting Monday.
The young forwards already in the system haven't forced the issue. Nate Danielson has two assists through nine games, and Marco Kasper is on IR until at least October 29.
Michael Brandsegg-Nygard and Emmitt Finnie, both 21, have combined for 15 points. That's the kind of youth Detroit wants more of.

Horcoff is running a pawn shop with a sign in the window: young centers only, no cash.
Keep Edvinsson. Big, young defensemen are harder to find than young centers, and Larkin alone should fetch the piece Detroit wants.
Carolina, Minnesota and New Jersey have all been linked to Larkin. The longer Detroit waits for the perfect center, the louder the noise gets around this room.
Should the Red Wings keep Simon Edvinsson and trade only Dylan Larkin?
