The Vancouver Canucks placed defenseman Jack Thompson on waivers Sunday, according to Elliotte Friedman.

Friedman also reported that everyone waived Saturday cleared. That leaves Thompson as the newest name on the wire.

The backdrop in Vancouver is ugly. The Canucks have lost nine straight and own the fewest points in the NHL with 5.

They've also allowed 56 goals through 12 games, more than any team in the league.

The 24-year-old right shot is listed at 6-foot-1 and hails from Courtice, Ontario.

Tampa Bay drafted him in the third round, 93rd overall, in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft.

Career-wise, he has 10 points in 34 NHL games.

Jack Thompson's AHL track record makes him a sneaky waiver claim

Thirty-one of those games came with the San Jose Sharks in 2024-25, and he went minus-9 in that stretch.

The minor-league resume reads better. Last season he went plus-13 over 42 games with the San Jose Barracuda.

He finished the year with the Abbotsford Canucks, piling up 13 points in 14 games.

Before turning pro, he came up through the OHL with the Sudbury Wolves and Soo Greyhounds.

He also suited up for Canada at the 2022 World Juniors, going plus-10 across 7 games.

His cap hit sits at $850,000, and he's headed for restricted free agency after this season.

That's a cheap, low-risk bet for any team thin on the right side. Somebody should put in a claim.

Waivers work like a lost-and-found bin. Useful gear lands there constantly, and Saturday's whole batch went unclaimed.

So does anybody bite this time?

Manny Malhotra has dressed young defensemen Zeev Buium and Tom Willander every night this season.

The veterans haven't stabilized much. Filip Hronek owns a -9 rating, and Jamie Oleksiak sits at -8.

Kevin Lankinen's .807 save percentage hasn't helped anybody back there.

The Wild come to town tonight, fresh off a 5-1 win in Seattle on Saturday. It's the first meeting between the teams this season.

Ryan Johnson took over as GM in May. If a rival grabs Thompson and he sticks, Johnson will be the one answering for it.
