Connor Hellebuyck says he's ready to play for the New Jersey Devils, but head coach Sheldon Keefe isn't handing him the crease just yet.
The star goaltender returned to practice Monday after a turbulent departure from the Winnipeg Jets, making it clear he wants to get back into NHL action immediately.
Asked when he could make his Devils debut, Hellebuyck delivered a direct answer.
"If you're asking me, I'm ready today. But I don't make every decision around here."
His confidence comes after a lengthy absence that began with his refusal to report to Winnipeg's training camp and continued through a 10-game suspension.
The Jets eventually traded him to New Jersey, ending a messy chapter and giving the Devils a proven goaltender with something to prove.
Sheldon Keefe faces a major decision on Connor Hellebuyck
Keefe indicated that Hellebuyck hopes to play during New Jersey's upcoming road trip, although the coaching staff still has several things to evaluate before clearing him for action.
The Devils visit the Dallas Stars on Tuesday, Colorado Avalanche on Wednesday and Vegas Golden Knights on Friday, creating several possible opportunities for his debut.
But throwing Hellebuyck straight into the crease carries some risk. He hasn't played a competitive game this season, with his preparation limited to private training sessions before the trade.
That raises legitimate concerns about timing, conditioning and how quickly he can adjust to a completely different defensive structure.
The Devils made an enormous investment to acquire him, surrendering Dawson Mercer, Nick Bjugstad, Alexander Command, Nico Daws and 2 draft picks.
Hellebuyck's track record explains the gamble. The 3-time Vezina Trophy winner remains one of hockey's most accomplished goaltenders, even after a difficult final season in Winnipeg.
His first practice with New Jersey provided an encouraging sign. Hellebuyck appeared eager to reconnect with teammates and resume the competitive routine he had been missing.
Now the pressure shifts toward Keefe. Hellebuyck wants the net immediately, and the Devils must decide whether patience or an early debut gives their new starter the strongest beginning.
Should Sheldon Keefe start Connor Hellebuyck immediately despite his extended absence?
