Former NHL linesman Matt Pavelich, a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame, died today at 92, according to Frank Seravalli.

The news landed Friday and the hockey world is already paying tribute to one of the longest-serving officials the league has known.

Pavelich was one of 16 on-ice officials in the Hall of Fame. That is a tiny group, considering how many people have worn the stripes over the history of the game.

He worked 23 NHL seasons and 1,727 regular season games. Those are numbers that only come from decades of showing up, night after night, in every building.

The playoff résumé is just as heavy. Pavelich officiated 245 playoff games, the stage where the job gets harder and the mistakes get louder.

And then there is the part that separates him from nearly everyone else who ever worked the lines. Pavelich worked every Stanley Cup Final from 1961 through 1979.

That kind of assignment does not happen by accident. The league sent him back to the biggest series of the year, again and again, because it trusted him with the moment.

Thirteen Cup clinchers and a career built on trust

Thirteen of those games were Cup clinching games. When the trophy comes out and the handshake line forms, the officials are the people who made sure the game was settled on the ice.

Most fans never think about a linesman unless something goes wrong. A great one is invisible, and that is exactly what makes a career like this so hard to measure.

Seravalli summed up the career in four words, calling it an incredible hockey life. The résumé backs him up.

Seravalli shared the news and the career numbers on social media, noting that Pavelich was one of only 16 on-ice officials in the Hall of Fame.

It is easy to rank players by goals and points. Officials do not get a stat line, which is why the games worked and the Finals covered are the only real way to size up a career like this one.

Pavelich's name will stay on the Hall of Fame's short list of officials. Tributes from around the league are likely to follow in the coming days.
