Gino Hard just reported that Flames defenseman Kevin Bahl is done for the 2026-27 season with a ruptured Achilles tendon, news the team announced this morning.

The timing stings. Calgary hosts the Flyers tonight, and it will do so without one of its most trusted blueliners.

Hard framed it as a major hit to the Flames' blue line, noting they lose one of their biggest minute-munchers until next season.

For a team already sitting 24th in the NHL, this is the wrong kind of news. The Flames are 7-9-1 and have lost two straight, most recently a 3-5 defeat to the Ducks on Friday.

Bahl is a 6'6, 230-pound defenseman who gives Ryan Huska size and physicality in the defensive zone. He had appeared in 16 games this season with one goal and one assist, and he had been listed as day-to-day with a lower-body issue.

The sheet does not say when the Achilles injury happened, so the timeline remains unclear. What is clear is that the season is over for him.

What the loss means for the Flames' defense

Calgary has allowed 60 goals in 17 games, a minus-18 goal differential that was already a problem before this. Removing a heavy-minutes defenseman from a group that is leaking goals only makes the math tougher.

Someone has to absorb those shifts. The Flames have not said who steps in, and general manager Craig Conroy now has a real decision about whether the answer is already in the organization.

Bahl is only 26, and his career line of 313 games shows a defenseman who has been a regular rather than a fringe piece. He was drafted 55th overall in 2018 by the Utah Mammoth, and he is far from a spare part on this roster.

My view: the Flames cannot treat this as a simple next-man-up situation. Their defense was a weak point with Bahl, and without him a trade for blue-line help becomes the move to watch.

The Flames host the Flyers tonight, the first game of their stretch without him.

Quick hits

FLORIDA PANTHERS: Paul Maurice told reporters Jacob Markstrom will start in Boston, per Jameson Olive. A clear answer on the crease before puck drop.

CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS: Bowen Byram won't return until he sees a "certain specialist," Pro Hockey Rumors reported. No timeline, which is never a comforting sign.

BOSTON BRUINS: Jeremy Swayman is back in net tonight against the Panthers, according to the projected lines from Boston Hockey Now.

WINNIPEG JETS: A post on X this morning says defenseman Elias Salomonsson will be away from the team indefinitely for personal reasons.

DALLAS STARS: Alex Nedeljkovic wanted a piece of Mikko Rantanen at the end of the second period of the Stars' 4-3 win over the Sharks last night. The goalie wasn't shy.
