The Colorado Avalanche and Valeri Nichushkin have had a controversial year after police were called on him in Seattle during the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs. During the Avalanche's series against the Seattle Kraken, police were called on Valeri Nichushkin after an intoxicated woman was found in his room by hotel staff.
Since this incident, Valeri Nichushkin has been facing the consequences of the situation. He did end up playing 54 games last season for the Colorado Avalanche before being placed in Stage 3 of the NHL's Player Assistance Program. Since then he has been out of the Colorado Avalanche's lineup without a timeline for his return.
With the NHL season approaching the Colorado Avalanche were asked about Valeri Nichushkin and his potential return to the team. President of Hockey Operations Joe Sakic not only gave an answer but a firm timeline.
In a new interview, Joe Sakic was asked about Valeri Nichushkin and his eventual return to the NHL. According to Joe Sakic, things are still on track for Valeri Nichushkin to return once his suspension ends. This would mean he comes back to the lineup sometime in November.
When Valeri Nichushkin keeps himself out of trouble he is one of the best power forwards in the NHL. Last season before his suspension Valeri Nichushkin played in 54 games and tallied 53 total points. The Colorado Avalanche will be hoping he can return to this elite production once he comes back.
If his production falls off then a discussion begins about whether or not his play is worth the risk that is now associated with having Valeri Nichushkin on the roster. This story will be one to follow as the season begins and Valeri Nichushkin eventually gets cleared from his suspension.
