The Montreal Canadiens have started slow early in the new NHL season, and now it appears they are potentially looking to make a massive addition.
Despite posting a 2-4-1 record through seven games this season, the Montreal Canadiens remain confident in their young core moving forward, and on the back of some great performances and the potential return of Patrik Kane, they believe they may be in contention for a Stanley Cup Playoff spot this season. While most people expected them to continue taking on bad deals for extra assets, that may not be the case after all, as TSN's Pierre LeBrun has now revealed that the team are potentially becoming buyers after their slow start to this season.
"What I'm being told from talking to teams around the league is that GM Kent Hughes has started to call around doing his due diligence, at least getting a sense of what is potentially out there, I think the Canadiens would be open to making a move here"
With Laine and David Reinbacher both out, the team are limited with their depth moving forward, and with enforcer Arber Xhekaj showing frustration after being left out of the lineup, it's unclear exactly who this team would be targeting. However, the rebuild has been going on for quite some time, and with the likes of Cole Caufield, Nick Suzuki and Juraj Slafkovsky all taking steps forward, it makes sense if Hughes would look to move some assets to add another proven player into their lineup.
As of now though, this is a very intriguing story to keep an eye on, as Montreal's young core that includes Lane Hutson, Logan Mailloux and Kirby Dach on top of the aforementioned players appear ready to take a step forward, and if they can find a player to help the team immediately, Hughes is preparing to be aggressive.
