Since being drafted in the fifth round in 2010, John Klingberg has accumulated over 400 points in 633 NHL games.
Once seen as one of the best offensive defensemen in the NHL, injuries and inconsistency led him to a string of one-year deals, the last of which was with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Per Elliotte Friedman and Darren Dreger, Klingberg has signed with the Edmonton Oilers.
We will see how Klingberg fits with the team, who have been looking to add a defenseman all season. If he can find his former offensive glory, it will be a key boost to a team with some of the best offensive weapons in the NHL.
The Oilers are already getting great performances from defensemen Brett Kulak and Darnell Nurse (despite his salary), but have been disappointed by Evan Bouchard.
Adding Klingberg's offensive punch will take some pressure off Bouchard and make the team much deeper.
The Oilers emerged as the frontrunners for the former top-10 Norris candidate earlier this week, taking over from his former teams in the Toronto Maple Leafs and Dallas Stars.
It is unknown if he will be able to return to form, or even if he will be able to be at an NHL level at all, but the upside of this move is very high.
Klingberg's prime is over, but his leadership must also be considered; he was a significant part of Dallas' run to the cup final in 2020, and was an alternate captain there for several years.
Truly the potential for a slam dunk in Edmonton.
