Filip Hronek almost ended up in Boston this summer, and the fact that he didn't says a lot about how the Vancouver Canucks are approaching their rebuild.
A Bruins production camera accidentally caught a screen showing a proposed trade framework involving Hronek during their coverage of free agency.
The reported package had Boston sending prospect Liam Pettersson and first-round picks in 2027 and 2028 to Vancouver in exchange for Hronek.
Hronek posted 49 points in 82 games last season, a career high, going minus-23 for a Canucks team that finished dead last overall.
That kind of top-pair production from a right-shot defenseman is exactly the type of asset a rebuilding team is supposed to be reluctant to move.
Vancouver had every reason to let this offer sit rather than rush into anything. Hronek is in his prime, plays the harder side of the ice to fill, and remains under contract for six more seasons.
His $7,250,000 cap hit runs through 2031-32, with a full no-movement clause through 2027-28 that means Vancouver couldn't have shopped him around even if it wanted to.
Why two first-round picks still wasn't enough
A prospect plus two first-round selections is a real offer, not bargain shopping. But real doesn't automatically mean irresistible for a defenseman this good.
Vancouver can afford patience here specifically because Hronek stabilizes a young defense corps that badly needs an experienced anchor during this rebuild.
Hronek himself made his intentions clear publicly. "I committed here and signed a contract here," he said, adding real optimism about what Vancouver can build during this stretch.
That's a very different signal than a player pushing to get out, and it gave GM Ryan Johnson zero pressure to entertain an offer that didn't clearly outweigh what Hronek already provides.
Boston ultimately moved on, adding other right-shot defensive options instead, while Vancouver kept its best defenseman without giving up a single asset.
Whether this framework ever became a real formal offer is still unclear. What is clear is that Vancouver never needed to sell, and it didn't.
