Matthew Schaefer gave Peter DeBoer and the New York Islanders a franchise marker on Wednesday, winning the 2026 Calder Trophy in a clean sweep.

The award locked in what had been obvious for months. Schaefer was the NHL's top rookie, and the vote left no room for debate.

The Islanders defenseman took all 198 first-place votes. That says plenty about the season he just delivered on the blue line.

As the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NHL Draft, Schaefer arrived with pressure already attached. He didn't just handle it. He drove the pace from opening night through Game 82.

He finished with 23 goals and 36 assists for 59 points. For a first-year defenseman, that kind of offensive output changes the temperature of an entire bench.

He is the first rookie to unanimously win the Calder Trophy since Teemu Selanne (WPG) in 1992-93.

He also logged 24:41 a night and finished with a +13 rating. That workload tells you the Islanders were already leaning on him in every major spot.

A rookie season that changed the Islanders' outlook: Matthew Schaefer

Schaefer's 23 goals matched Brian Leetch for the most by a rookie defenseman. That's not a small footnote. That's instant company at the top of the record book.

He also became the seventh defenseman this century to win the Calder. The list is short, and that's what makes this one hit harder.

The bigger story for the Islanders is what comes next. Schaefer didn't look like a sheltered rookie getting soft minutes. He looked like a player ready to run a blue line.

New York stayed in the playoff race for most of the season before fading in April. Schaefer was one of the main reasons that push lasted as long as it did.

The finish still stings, but this award shifts the conversation. The Islanders now have a young cornerstone and a coach in DeBoer who can build around him fast.

Ivan Demidov and Beckett Sennecke finished behind Schaefer among the finalists. Demidov picked up 120 second-place votes, while Sennecke had 41.

That part matters too. This wasn't a weak rookie class. Schaefer still walked away as the clear choice.

For the Islanders, Wednesday wasn't just about hardware. It felt like the first real sign that the next core piece is already in place.
