Phillip Danault gave Martin St-Louis exactly the kind of playoff follow-up the Canadiens needed in a 6-2 Game 1 statement.

Montreal did more than steal the opener in Carolina.

The Canadiens walked into Lenovo Center, put up 4 goals in the first period, and left with a 1-0 series lead after completely flipping the pressure onto the Hurricanes.

That is why this locker-room scene mattered.

After a road win like that, the room could have gone in a dozen directions. Instead, Alex Newhook kept it simple and pointed straight at the guy who helped settle the whole thing.

«Good job, guys. Hell of a game.»

Then came the part that landed.

«Dobes, good job. Slaf too, Cole too... but I'm going with Phil (Danault).»

That line set up the room perfectly because Danault's game matched the scoreline.

He was right in the middle of a playoff punch that left Carolina embarrassed on home ice and even sent fans to the exits early in the third while the Canadiens kept rolling.

Then Newhook handed him the team's fur hat, the now-famous player-of-the-game award that has become one of the better little snapshots of this run.

Danault's answer was exactly what St-Louis would want from a room trying to stay level after a blowout.

«Alright boys, we stuck with it after the second. Let's keep it going!»

That quote matters because it cuts through the easy trap after a 6-2 win.

Montreal could have soaked in the score and the highlight reel. Danault went the other way and brought it back to discipline, structure, and the next push.

That is a veteran message.

It also says a lot about where this team is mentally. The Canadiens are young, loud, and full of swagger right now, but they are still getting the right reminders from players who understand a conference final can turn fast.

That is why the fur hat moment was bigger than a fun clip.

It showed who set the tone after a win that could have made Montreal too comfortable.

Danault got the room's respect, Newhook gave him the spotlight, and the Canadiens walked out of Game 1 looking like a team that knows exactly what to do with momentum.

Now comes the hard part.

Game 2 is where Montreal has to prove this was not just one wild road punch. But after the way Danault answered in that room, the message sounded clear enough.

Enjoy it for a minute.

Then keep it going.
