Martin St-Louis and Rod Brind'Amour shared a striking moment after Carolina eliminated Montreal, and the NHL finally revealed what was said.

The exchange came in the handshake line, right after the Canadiens were knocked out by the Hurricanes in a bitter end to their run.

That kind of moment is usually private. This time, the league microphones caught it, and the audio surfaced in Episode 3 of Quest for the Stanley Cup.

It instantly stood out because of who was involved.

St-Louis and Brind'Amour come from a similar hockey path, both former NHL players now leading from behind the bench.

There's real respect there, and it showed. What looked brief on television was actually a longer conversation between two coaches who clearly understand the grind.

Observers had already noticed the discussion lasted more than a standard handshake-line nod. The full context only made it stronger.

A message that could stick with Montreal from Rod Brind'Amour

Brind'Amour's words carried weight. The Hurricanes coach didn't treat Montreal like a team that simply fell short. He framed the loss as part of something bigger.

"I know where you come from," Brind'Amour reportedly said, pointing to the road taken by Montreal's young core and the work still ahead.

That's not empty praise coming from a coach with his résumé. It sounded like recognition from someone who has seen what a rising group looks like up close.

St-Louis answered with class of his own. He told Brind'Amour he was happy to see him take that big step as Carolina kept moving through the Stanley Cup chase.

That's what made the scene land. The Canadiens had just been eliminated from the conference final, yet St-Louis still took a second to acknowledge Brind'Amour's moment.

For Montreal fans, Brind'Amour's message will stick through the summer.

The Canadiens may be "just getting started," but now comes the hard part: turning that belief into results next season.
