Brennan Othmann has his next contract, giving Ryan Huska and the Calgary Flames another young winger to evaluate heading into camp.
The former New York Rangers first-round pick signed a one-year, two-way deal with Calgary on Friday, extending his NHL opportunity after his entry-level contract expired.
Othmann will carry a $975,000 AAV at the NHL level. His AHL salary is set at $220,000, with $250,000 guaranteed.
That structure gives Calgary flexibility. Othmann can push for an NHL job without forcing the Flames into a difficult roster decision if he needs more development time.

The 23-year-old winger arrives with pedigree. New York selected him 16th overall in the 2021 NHL Draft, but a permanent spot with the Rangers never materialized.
Othmann played 19 NHL games last season, recording 2 goals and 1 assist. His limited production left him needing a fresh opportunity and a clearer path to meaningful minutes.
Over his NHL career, Othmann has appeared in 44 games and produced 5 points. Calgary is betting that there's still more offense to unlock from the former top prospect.
Othmann gets a fresh shot in Calgary
The contract does not guarantee Othmann a place in Huska's opening-night lineup. A two-way agreement makes this a competition, not a commitment to an NHL role.
That could suit Othmann. He now gets a chance to arrive at camp with a clean slate and force his way into Calgary's winger mix through pace, forechecking and offensive pressure.
The Flames also avoid taking on much financial risk. If Othmann earns NHL minutes, his $975,000 cap number leaves management plenty of flexibility elsewhere on the roster.
For general manager Craig Conroy, this is the type of move that creates internal competition without locking the club into term. Othmann gets opportunity, while Calgary keeps options open.
The Rangers connection will draw attention because Othmann once carried significant expectations in New York. His next chapter will be about turning that draft pedigree into consistent NHL deployment.
Now the pressure shifts to camp. Othmann has a contract, but the bigger question is whether he can turn Calgary's opening into the full-time NHL role that never came together with the Rangers.
