The Chicago Blackhawks opened preseason play with a 3-2 loss to the Minnesota Wild, but Kevin Korchinski's performance is the real story worth watching.
Six different Blackhawks players scored a point in the loss, with veteran goaltender Calvin Pickard in net.
Korchinski logged 25:25 of ice time Saturday, picking up an assist, a hit, two takeaways, and 28 shifts including power play minutes.
That's a real workload for a player still trying to prove he belongs at the NHL level after three uneven pro seasons.
Chicago rushed Korchinski into the league at just 19 years old, when roster rules prevented him from being sent to the AHL. He posted 15 points in 76 games that rookie year, often outmatched physically.
He spent most of the following two seasons with Rockford in the AHL, posting 27 points in 56 games in 2024-25 and winning MVP at the AHL All-Star Game that year.
Last season, Korchinski again split time mostly in the AHL, managing 24 points in 53 games there and just 2 points in 13 NHL appearances.
Why the roster crunch complicates his path forward
Chicago signed veteran Ian Cole this offseason and handed Wyatt Kaiser a full-time NHL job, leaving Korchinski without a clear path onto the roster despite being a former seventh overall pick.
Cole posted 23 points in 82 games last season, and Kaiser added 17 points in 77 games, both established ahead of Korchinski on the current depth chart.
GM Kyle Davidson signed Korchinski to a two-year deal in August, a decision that could mean another real shot at the roster, or simply insurance while the team weighs its options.
If Davidson wants to flip a former first-rounder for draft capital, a strong preseason showing like Saturday's is exactly the kind of showcase that raises his trade value.
Prospect Xavier Villeneuve, the 34th overall pick in 2026, turning pro soon could add even more pressure to this same position group down the line.
For now, Korchinski's game looks NHL-ready. Whether Chicago's roster actually has room for him is still the open question.
