Rangers prospect suffers concerning injury after a punishing hit

Adam Sykora appeared to injure his right knee on a hit during Sunday's preseason game, and the New York Rangers are waiting on more information.

There's no confirmed diagnosis yet on the severity of the injury or how much time, if any, Sykora might miss.

Sykora just turned 22 and posted 4 points in 11 games with New York last season, closing out his rookie campaign on the NHL roster after a strong late-season stretch.

He was one of the more interesting names heading into camp, given his path could be blocked by the recent signing of Eeli Tolvanen and other forwards requiring waivers to get sent down.

Any real knee injury now would be a tough blow, arriving right as Sykora was fighting to carve out a spot on New York's opening night roster.

The Rangers have already dealt with real uncertainty on the back end this camp, with Alberts Smits and others sorting out roles under a shortened preseason schedule.

Why the timing makes this scarier than a normal camp bump

With just four preseason games on the schedule this year, missing any real time cuts deeply into whatever runway Sykora had left to prove himself.

Head coach Mike Sullivan has already emphasized how little room there is for error in a compressed camp, a message that applies just as much to injury recovery timelines as it does to performance.
