Dan Vladar gave the Flyers a scare, but Rick Tocchet delivered a far more encouraging update Wednesday.
Tocchet said Vladar is day to day after leaving Philadelphia's latest preseason game and indicated the Flyers believe they avoided a much more serious injury.
That matters because Vladar's exit didn't look routine. The goaltender appeared awkward as the play developed, immediately creating concern about a possible lower-body issue.
Nothing in Tocchet's update pointed toward a long absence. Day to day leaves the door open for Vladar to get back on the ice without Philadelphia having to immediately reshape its goaltending plans.

The timing makes the update even bigger. Training camp is moving toward the regular season, when coaches want their expected starters healthy, settled and getting comfortable behind the group in front of them.
Philadelphia leaned heavily on Vladar during last season's playoff run, making his health one of the more important storylines around the crease entering the new season.
Flyers avoid a major goaltending problem
The immediate concern wasn't simply losing a preseason start. An extended Vladar absence could have forced Tocchet to change his early-season rotation before the schedule even began.
Instead, the Flyers can treat this as a short-term situation for now. Vladar may miss practice or preseason work while the club monitors how he responds.
For a goaltender, anything involving awkward movement naturally draws attention. Pushing across the crease, dropping into position and recovering all demand explosive lower-body movement, so Philadelphia has reason to be cautious.
The good news is that Tocchet's message came without the kind of language that usually accompanies a lengthy timeline. The Flyers aren't talking about weeks or a major rehabilitation process.
That changes the mood around the club quickly. What initially looked like an injury capable of disrupting Philadelphia's opening plans now carries a much more manageable day-to-day designation.
The next checkpoint will be Vladar's return to practice and how much work he can handle. Philadelphia doesn't need to rush him through preseason action simply to get another appearance.
For the Flyers, the biggest development is clear: their goaltending picture remains intact for the moment, and Vladar still has a path toward being available when the regular season arrives.
Is Dan Vladar the Flyers' most important player to have healthy for opening night?
