The Maple Leafs traded Matthew Knies, and the loudest explanation so far has nothing to do with his character.
Elliotte Friedman addressed it Tuesday on the Real Kyper & Bourne, the same day Toronto hosts Montreal. His read points straight at the medical file.
"Nobody ever said this is a bad guy or this is a terrible person or we don't like him," Friedman said.
Then came the part that stings. "The only concerns I ever heard about him were that he gets hurt so maybe that was an issue to them."
In the clip, Friedman runs through the list of things nobody said before landing on the one thing he did hear.

Here's the problem with the injury theory. The winger dressed for 80, 78 and 79 games over the last three seasons.
Hard to call that fragile, especially for a 6-foot-3, 232-pound forward who's still only 23.
Last season he put up 23 goals and 66 points. The year before, he scored 29 and added seven points in 13 playoff games.
There's a darker number too. Knies finished 2025-26 at a -30 rating, and if Toronto wanted a reason, that one speaks louder than any trainer's report.
Moving him over injury worry is like selling your car because the mechanic once heard a noise. The odometer says it runs fine.
Unless the return is massive, this is a bad trade for Toronto. A 2021 second-rounder who reached 160 NHL points by 23 is exactly the asset contenders spend years trying to draft.
Jim Hiller, hired June 17, now has to reshape his forward group without him. The Leafs host the Canadiens riding a two-game win streak.
Auston Matthews and William Nylander still anchor the cap at $13,250,000 and $11,500,000. The kid who was supposed to grow into that tier is gone.
If Knies stays healthy wherever he lands, this deal gets replayed in Toronto for years. And "maybe" won't be a good enough answer.
