Gavin McKenna's rookie lap took an unexpected turn under Jim Hiller, and Sergei Bobrovsky's decision may have carried a message.

The Maple Leafs' veteran goaltender stepped onto the ice before McKenna ahead of the rookie's NHL debut Tuesday, breaking the tradition of giving a first-time NHLer the ice to himself.

At first, Bobrovsky's strict pregame routine offered an easy explanation. Goalies have their habits, and Bobrovsky has long preferred being first onto the ice.

But another detail changed the conversation. McKenna had skipped Toronto's optional morning skate earlier that day, despite preparing to play the first NHL game of his career.

Bobrovsky was at that session. That has fueled the belief that his decision to step out before McKenna wasn't simply about routine, but a veteran delivering a pointed locker-room lesson.

The message would be simple: being the No. 1 overall pick doesn't put a rookie above the daily standards expected inside an NHL room.

Bobrovsky had made an exception before

There's another wrinkle that makes the situation harder to dismiss as pure superstition. Previous footage shows Bobrovsky staying back and allowing a Florida Panthers rookie to take the traditional lap alone.

That precedent matters. If Bobrovsky was willing to alter his routine before, his decision with McKenna naturally raises questions about whether Tuesday's move was intentional.

McKenna's choice to miss the morning skate had already drawn public criticism. Renaud Lavoie questioned why an 18-year-old rookie preparing for his NHL debut was watching rather than skating.

McKenna then went minus-2 with one shot in 15:19 as Toronto lost 3-2 to Montreal. Bobrovsky stopped 21 of 24 shots.

McKenna didn't publicly complain about the rookie-lap incident. Afterward, he still described getting his rookie lap and seeing his family along the glass as part of a special night.

But Bobrovsky's presence at the optional skate gives the episode another layer. For a veteran goaltender, stepping out early may have been less about taking McKenna's moment and more about reminding him that NHL traditions come with NHL expectations.
