Simon Edvinsson has reportedly told the Detroit Red Wings he prefers to be traded rather than sign an extension.

Elliotte Friedman reported it Saturday night, as relayed by Gino Hard.

Edvinsson's camp isn't currently talking with the Red Wings, per the report.

The Red Wings, meanwhile, are telling other teams they're still trying to extend the defenseman.

Those two positions don't fit together. When one side has stopped talking, "still trying" sounds a lot like protecting trade value.

It's telling the neighbors the house isn't for sale while the realtor's sign is already sitting in the trunk.

How did Detroit get here? This news lands on top of a week that was already ugly.

Dylan Larkin wasn't in uniform for the home opener, and Todd McLellan said he has to live with the ramifications of asking for a trade.

Red Wings fans booed during the introductions, per Marqueur.com.

Larkin named Florida, Vegas and Minnesota in June, and Friedman later linked the Panthers and Eetu Luostarinen to his situation.

Friedman also said the Red Wings aren't looking to rebuild and want players they can use right away in any Larkin deal.

Marco Kasper is out with an upper-body injury, listed until at least October 6.

The Red Wings were shut out 2-0 by the Rangers in that opener, even with John Gibson stopping 19 of 20.

Edvinsson's status as a restricted free agent gives the Red Wings more say than they'd have with an unrestricted player, which makes his stance even more pointed.

Moritz Seider carries the biggest cap hit among Detroit's defensemen at $8,550,000.

The Red Wings dressed Axel Sandin Pellikka, 21, and Anton Johansson, 22, in the opener, so the youth on the blue line doesn't start and end with Edvinsson.

The Jets visit Sunday afternoon, then the Senators come in on Tuesday.

Detroit says it's still trying. With Larkin and now Edvinsson pointing toward the door, the Red Wings may be fielding more trade calls than they make this fall.
