Jim Hiller won't say how long Chris Tanev will be out, and the Maple Leafs carry that question into Utah tonight.
The 36-year-old defenceman went down with an upper-body injury early in Saturday's 6-3 comeback win in Colorado. Toronto placed him on injured reserve Monday, retroactively.
The earliest return date on the board is October 19. So no No. 8 tonight, none Thursday against Buffalo, and none Saturday against the Islanders.

After Monday's practice in Utah, Hiller admitted he didn't have a good sense of when his veteran would be back.
The nature of the injury? "I'm not going to get into any of that," the coach said.
Teams guard upper-body details the way poker players guard their hole cards. But this silence lands heavier, because Tanev's recent history reads like a hospital chart.
He suffered consecutive head and neck injuries last fall, then a core muscle injury, and the 2025-26 season mostly slipped away from him.
Toronto goes by committee and Darren Raddysh feels the heat
Hiller plans to lean on a "by committee" approach. Translation: nobody on this roster defends quite like the man on injured reserve.
The projected top pair tonight is Jake McCabe with Darren Raddysh. McCabe sits at +2, which is fine.
His partner is the problem. Raddysh went minus-4 through six games while carrying an $8,500,000 cap hit.
Morgan Rielly slides beside Troy Stecher on the second pair, with Oliver Ekman-Larsson anchoring the third.
Ekman-Larsson got banged up in Thursday's loss in Vegas and skipped Monday's practice for maintenance. He's still expected to play.
A penalty kill that has been stellar so far now gets its first real test without its veteran conscience.
"Players go through a lot," Rielly said. "So, we'll wait to hear more. But we love him and we'll support him."
Up front, Toronto has firepower to burn. Auston Matthews has 10 points over his last five games, and William Nylander leads the team with 11 on the season.
John Tavares also rejoins the lineup tonight after flying home for the birth of his son, Tucker.
Utah won't make it easy. The Mammoth come in at 4-2-0 and allow just 2.5 goals per game.
Toronto sits fourth in the Atlantic at 3-2-1. This is the first of two meetings with Utah, with the rematch set for November 3 in Toronto.
The front office was already kicking tires on blue-line help before Saturday. Waiting on a diagnosis nobody will share would be a mistake, and a costly one.
Tanev is only in the third year of a six-year deal at $4,500,000 per season.
How long can Toronto build a defence around a player whose return date stays blank?

Should the Maple Leafs trade for a defenceman now instead of waiting on Chris Tanev's diagnosis?
