William Nylander's illness had Jim Hiller facing another lineup headache, but Auston Matthews just delivered the update Maple Leafs fans needed.

Earlier Monday morning, the Toronto Maple Leafs announced that Nylander was day-to-day with an illness, immediately raising questions about his availability against the San Jose Sharks tonight.

The uncertainty grew when Nylander missed the morning skate. With Toronto already struggling to find consistency, losing another important offensive weapon was the last thing the club needed.

But Matthews has now stepped forward with an encouraging update, suggesting there is little reason to believe Nylander's absence will extend into tonight's matchup.

Speaking about his teammate's condition, Matthews sounded relaxed and confident rather than concerned about the possibility of Nylander missing the game.

"I think he's gonna be great tonight. It's usually how it goes with him. So I don't think any of us are too worried."

That comment changes the tone surrounding Nylander's status.

"Based on that reaction from Matthews, Nylander was def hungoer."

William Nylander will play vs. Sharks Monday

What initially looked like a potentially costly absence now sounds considerably less concerning, especially coming directly from Toronto's captain.

Matthews didn't formally confirm Nylander would dress, but his confidence strongly suggests the Maple Leafs expect their talented winger to be available when the puck drops.

That's enormous news for a Toronto team that has already dropped three consecutive games and desperately needs its best offensive players on the ice.

Nylander has recorded 12 points through nine games this season, making him one of Toronto's most productive forwards and a major part of its offensive attack.

With John Tavares also sidelined, Hiller can hardly afford another hole in his forward group. Nylander's absence would force difficult adjustments throughout the top six.

His creativity with the puck, ability to generate scoring chances and presence on the power play give Toronto options that aren't easily replaced by another winger.

The timing matters, too. Facing San Jose at home represents an opportunity for the Maple Leafs to stop their slide before the pressure surrounding their disappointing start intensifies.

There is still a difference between Matthews expecting Nylander to play and the team officially clearing him. His final availability remains subject to Toronto's lineup decision.

Still, Matthews' comments offer the strongest indication yet that this illness isn't expected to keep Nylander out for long, and possibly not even for tonight.

For Maple Leafs fans worried about another missing star, that's a welcome development heading into puck drop.
