Brady Tkachuk gave Paul Maurice the reaction he expected, but Ottawa Senators fans pushed it into nastier territory.
The boos were always coming. Tkachuk knew that the second he returned to Canadian Tire Centre in a Florida Panthers jersey.
This was not just a former captain walking back into an old rink. This was Ottawa unloading months of frustration after the split that sent him to Florida on June 21.
The Senators won the game 5-1, which gave the crowd even more room to pile on. Tkachuk still scored Florida's only goal.
That should have been enough theatre for one night. Former captain gets booed, scores, loses, and leaves with the building roaring against him.
But the chants went past normal hockey venom. “We don't need you,” “Little brother,” “You can't read,” “You eat crayons,” and “Brady's balding” turned the night into something more personal.

Ottawa made its message loud and messy
Fans have every right to boo. Tkachuk asked out after 8 seasons with the Senators, and the crowd had earned its chance to respond.
But there is a line between holding a player accountable and turning a tribute night into a public pile-on. Ottawa danced on that line all night.
The tribute video barely had a chance to land. Tkachuk raised his stick anyway, smiling through a building that wanted him to hear every word.
That part says plenty about him. The Panthers lost badly, but Tkachuk did not duck the moment or shrink from the noise.
Ottawa also looked stronger without needing the cheap stuff. The Senators are now 7-3-0, with a 5-goal differential and real early-season momentum.
Florida left at 5-3-2, and Maurice now has a locker room that just watched one of its top forwards take the full weight of a former market's anger.
The chants will travel farther than the score. That is the risk when a passionate fan base turns one emotional return into a night that feels bigger than the standings.
Tkachuk gave Ottawa effort, years, captaincy, and edge. Fans did not have to forgive him, but they did not need to make the goodbye that ugly either.
