Kirill Marchenko's ugly fall in Calgary has left Jim Hiller facing another injury concern, and Dr. Harjas Grewal has offered his assessment.

The Toronto Maple Leafs forward exited Monday night's game against the Calgary Flames after an awkward collision with Yegor Sharangovich sent him crashing toward the boards.

Marchenko immediately appeared uncomfortable, favouring his left leg before making his way back toward the bench. He briefly attempted another shift but couldn't continue.

Toronto eventually ruled him out with a lower-body injury, leaving fans concerned about the severity of the damage.

Dr. Harjas Grewal, who regularly analyzes NHL injuries, examined the sequence and suggested Marchenko likely suffered an MCL injury.

Grewal believes the damage could be less severe than initially feared, suggesting a recovery ranging from day-to-day to 2-3 weeks rather than the usual 4-6 weeks.

The footage shows Marchenko losing his balance following contact, with his leg bending awkwardly underneath him before he grabs at his knee.

Marchenko may have suffered an MCL injury

Grewal also pointed out that the movement could place stress on the inside of the ankle, although Marchenko's reaction suggested the knee was the primary concern.

That distinction matters. Grewal's assessment is based on the visible sequence, not a confirmed medical examination, and the Maple Leafs haven't announced a specific diagnosis.

Marchenko entered Monday's contest with 6 goals and 14 points, establishing himself as an important offensive contributor since arriving from Columbus.

His absence would create another headache for Hiller, particularly with Toronto already dealing with injuries throughout its lineup.

The Maple Leafs lost 5-2 in Calgary, ending their four-game winning streak, but Marchenko's health became the bigger concern coming out of the game.

Toronto faces Seattle on Wednesday, making his availability an immediate question as the club continues its road trip.

For now, Grewal's assessment offers some encouragement, but the next update from the Maple Leafs will determine whether Marchenko is facing a short absence or something more serious.
