Nikita Kucherov has told the Tampa Bay Lightning he won't re-sign and has asked for a trade, according to Sportsnet.
The report, which cites sources, arrives one day after the Lightning beat the Jets 6-4 on Thursday night. Kucherov finished that game with an assist.
This is a contract story, and the numbers frame it. His cap hit is $9,500,000, and the deal runs through 2026-27 with unrestricted free agency waiting at expiry. No extension has been signed.
| GP | G | A | PTS | +/- | |
| 2026-27 | 12 | 4 | 11 | 15 | +2 |
| Career | 891 | 404 | 734 | 1138 | +202 |
Nothing in the production suggests a player winding down. Kucherov has 4 goals and 11 assists for 15 points in 12 games this season, with a +2 rating.
On Thursday he played 16:13 and put 3 shots on goal. He also took 2 penalty minutes. Jake Guentzel (22:51) and Brandon Hagel (21:47) logged far more ice time than he did.
The standings add weight to the decision. Tampa Bay sits 8th in the NHL at 8-3-1, third in the Atlantic Division, and is 6-0-0 at home. The road is a different story at 2-3-1.
A team in that position has no reason to rush a sale. Moving a point-per-game winger while the Lightning are winning would be a mistake unless the return is overwhelming.
Julien Brisebois now holds the Lightning's biggest decision
The general manager has a player who has made his intentions known and a contract with one season left. Julien Brisebois can wait, or he can test the market. Neither option is comfortable.
Kucherov was drafted 58th overall by the Lightning in 2011. Over his NHL career he has 404 goals and 734 assists for 1,138 points in 891 regular-season games.
The playoff résumé is just as heavy, with 177 points in 159 postseason games. That is the type of production no team replaces from the trade market.
Thursday also showed how deep this roster is. Pontus Holmberg had 4 points, while Anthony Cirelli and Hagel each had 3. Jon Cooper got that output with Kucherov held off the scoresheet in goals.
Depth can cover a night, but not a full season without a player of his caliber. The Lightning next play at Nashville on Saturday, and the first questions will be about Kucherov, not the opponent.
Should the Lightning trade Nikita Kucherov this season instead of letting him walk in free agency?
