Nikita Kucherov has finally spoken about his trade request, and it lands a day before the Lightning face Detroit.

The silence had become its own story. For days, the rumors ran well ahead of anything the player himself had said.

Over the weekend, Pierre LeBrun's Canadiens and Nikita Kucherov trade chatter put Montreal on the radar, with the added note that Tampa Bay would never deal him inside the division. Then came the guesses, a Vegas fan pitch and a Kings idea on a 10-team list.

That is a lot of noise built on nothing from the man at the center of it.

The timing is odd, too. The Lightning are 8-3-2 and sit 8th in the NHL, hardly a team in a hurry to blow things up.

Kucherov has 18 points in 13 games, including 14 assists. He is producing like a player who still wants to be the best forward on the ice every night, whatever his plans are for next year.

Why a Kucherov trade makes little sense for Tampa Bay right now

Look at where the Lightning are winning. They're 6-0-0 at home and 2-3-2 on the road, and the last outing was a 5-4 shootout loss at Nashville on Saturday.

Moving the franchise's top scorer from a team that is 8th in the league would be a bad idea. Jon Cooper's group has a +5 goal differential, and that margin is thin enough that losing a forward of this caliber would show up fast.

The money is part of the equation. Kucherov's $9.5 million cap hit runs through 2026-27, and he is set to reach unrestricted free agency when it expires. No extension has been signed.

That puts Julien Brisebois on a clock. Any suitor would be buying a player who could walk next summer, and Tampa Bay would be selling a 33-year-old with 1,141 career points, a decision that is hard to defend while the team is winning.

Teams that were floated in the rumors, from Vegas to Los Angeles, have that Vegas fan pitch for Kucherov as the loudest example, and none of it has been confirmed by a team.
