Controversial NHL Defenseman reportedly signs outside of North America

A controversial NHL veteran defenseman Tony DeAngelo has reportedly signed a contract with a team outside of North America just weeks after claiming he was only focused on the NHL.

Tony Deangelo, the right-handed defenseman that has played for 3 different Metropolitan Division teams, has reportedly signed with SKA St. Petersburg of the KHL in Russia. This comes after having to make a statement that he was not signing with SKA after rumors circulated on August 3rd.

Deangelo, who has had his fair share of controversies ranging from calling opposing players racist names while playing junior hockey with the Sarnia Sting and getting punched by his goaltender after making a rude comment, is rumored to have signed a one-year contract worth around $1 million USD.

The former Hurricanes defender has played in 371 career NHL games. In that time, he amassed 48 goals and 162 assists for 210 points.

Speculation started this afternoon when SKA head coach Roman Rotenberg posted a clip from a movie and captioned it, "Incredibly adventures of Italians in Russia" with a smiley face after it. A few hours after that, the official SKA social media account had reposted Rotenberg's post, fueling speculation that they had signed Deangelo. Early reaction from the fans of SKA have been less than welcoming, with one fan asking, "What is the logic" and multiple fans calling for Rotenberg to be fired.
