Tonight kicked off the beginning of the NHL season for the majority of the league with a three-game slate. Game number two featured the Florida Panthers raising their championship banner against the Boston Bruins. Early in the game things got incredibly heated between Mark Kastelic and AJ Greer. After a big hit from Kastelic he and Greer dropped the gloves.
Florida's AJ Greer would go on to claim the momentum from the fight and his team would respond with a ton of energy. In short order, the Florida Panthers scored a pair of goals from Sam Bennett and Eetu Luostarinen.
While the Bruins would try to fight back the game would quickly get away from them. About halfway through the 2nd period, the Bruins would find themselves down 5-1. This is when the Florida Panthers fans decided to have some fun and started to chant for Jeremy Swayman the Bruins' star goaltender.
The Boston Bruins under normal circumstances would have had Jeremy Swayman start their opening night game. However, this offseason the Boston Bruins and Jeremy Swayman got into a brutal contract dispute which led Jeremy Swayman to hold out for much of training camp. Eventually, Swayman and the Bruins agreed to a long-term contract. With the contract signed Jeremy Swayman could return to the team and play. The only problem is the preseason was over and Jeremy Swayman had not gotten a chance to work the dust off yet.
Due to these circumstances, Joonas Korpisalo was named the starter for the opener against the Florida Panthers. In the third period with the game clearly out of reach the Panthers fans decided to have fun with the visiting Bruins. They began chanting "We want Swayman" knowing that head coach Jim Montgomery and the Bruins would likely not put him in under the circumstances.
The Bruins of course did not follow the wants of the fans and left Joonas Korpisalo in to finish the game. The Panthers came home with the win 6-4 after a valiant effort to try and come back by the Bruins.
Now both teams will move on to their next opponents and try to continue their way towards a Stanley Cup Playoff spot. If the Boston Bruins are going to find themselves in the Stanley Cup Playoffs they will need Jeremy Swayman to get up to speed in a hurry.
