Tristan Jarry has been one of the worst goaltenders in the NHL this season, but now he's broken his silence on his early season struggles.
The 2024/25 season has been an up-and-down one thus far for the Pittsburgh Penguins, with the team going 3-3-0 through their first six games, and while that record isn't too bad, it's the performance in net that's holding them back. Through three starts, Tristan Jarry has tallied a 5.47 GAA and an .836 save percentage, and with Joel Blomqvist thriving and Alex Nedeljkovic on the way back, his future in Pittsburgh is up in the air.
In those three games, Jarry has a 1-2 record while allowing 12 goals on 73 shots, and now he has opened up about the struggles that are clearly effecting him on and off the ice.
"Just, honestly, letting go," said Jarry of what he was working on. "We did a lot of mental aspects of the game to start the season, a lot of video, a lot of teaching. So I think now is just at the point of letting go and being myself, trying to be the best goalie moving forward."
As a professional athlete, one of the hardest things in the world to do is quieten the noise that goes on in your head during bad times, especially in such a high-profile spot like Pittsburgh, and it appears that's the toughest battle that the 29-year old is dealing with right now. That was reiterated by Head Coach Mike Sullivan, who threw all his support behind Jarry after the team lost 4-1 to the Hurricanes, falling to 3-3-0 on the year.
"To a certain extent, sometimes, when players struggle at any of the positions, in a lot of my experiences, sometimes you can be your own biggest obstacle," admitted Sullivan. "You have to find a way to get out of your own way, allow your instincts to take over."
With a $5.25 million AAV deal with multiple years left on it, it's very unlikely that the team will find any way to move Jarry, but given his struggles, it's a story that may continue to come up more and more as the year rolls on.
