On Sunday, the Los Angeles Kings shocked the NHL world when they waived 23-year old forward Arthur Kaliyev, who has not been active this season after breaking his collar bone in camp.
That sparked plenty of speculation about teams that could claim him, with the Ottawa Senators noted as one team that would love to land the 6-foot-2 forward that was once a second-round pick in the NHL.
Now however, the hockey world has been shocked once more, with Chris Drury and the New York Rangers landing Kaliyev on waivers after their immense struggles this season as they look to replace Kaapo Kakko on the wing.
On paper, this is a great acquisition for New York, who would love to have a big, physical presence in their lineup that can produce points, and while it may not be the move that single handedly turns around the Rangers downfall, it's certainly a solid pickup.
In his first two full seasons at the NHL level, Kaliyev posted 27 and 28 points, but has dealt with injury and inconsistency issues since that point, and now he'll get a good chance at the NHL level to get back to what he was when he first debuted.
With his return imminent, Kaliyev may look to get a spot in the Rangers top-nine immediately, with Brett Berard or Will Cuylle's spot on the third line potentially where he could slot in.
There was expected to be plenty of interest, but with a high waiver spot, something that no one saw coming at the start of the year, New York land the talented 23-year old as they look to get back into the race in the Eastern Conference.
