Dakota Joshua gave Jim Hiller and the Maple Leafs a fresh Opening Night concern after skating with the Marlies group Monday.
The bigger issue came afterward. Hiller said he isn't certain Joshua will be ready for Opening Night, putting an important forward's availability in question before the season even begins.
Hiller also declined to specify the injury. That leaves Toronto with uncertainty around both Joshua's condition and exactly how quickly he can rejoin the NHL group.
Skating at all is a positive sign, but the setting matters. Joshua worked with the Marlies group rather than taking a normal day with the Leafs.
That instantly changes the tone around his camp. Toronto isn't simply managing a routine practice absence when its head coach can't commit to Joshua being available for the opener.

And with roster decisions coming, every missed NHL practice creates another chance for another forward to grab a longer look from Hiller.
Joshua's status suddenly becomes a lineup issue
Joshua's situation now reaches beyond his own recovery. Hiller has to prepare combinations without knowing whether one of his expected NHL forwards will be ready when the schedule starts.
That can affect where other forwards skate, who receives extra reps and which players get extended opportunities during the final stretch of camp.
The Leafs also have to be careful with timing. A return to skating doesn't automatically mean a player is ready for full practices, contact and game action.
For now, Toronto has only one clear answer: Joshua is progressing enough to skate, but Hiller isn't prepared to declare him ready for Opening Night.
That gap is what makes the update uncomfortable. The season hasn't started, yet the Leafs are already facing a potentially meaningful question in their forward group.
Joshua's next step will be watched closely. Rejoining the main group would ease some of the concern, while more time with the Marlies group would keep the uncertainty alive.
Until Hiller gives the green light, Toronto has to plan around the possibility that Joshua won't be there when the puck drops on the new season.
