Aleksander Barkov is back with Paul Maurice's Panthers after a knee injury wiped out his entire 2025-26 NHL season.
The Florida captain tore both his ACL and MCL on Sept. 25, 2025, just minutes into the first practice of training camp. Surgery followed the next day, ending his season before it started.
The injury also erased Barkov's chance to captain Finland at the 2026 Winter Olympics. That part of the setback still hits hard.
“I was really sad about that,” Barkov said. “Right away, I knew it was going to be a tough test to rehab myself to get there. So, it was pretty much impossible.”
Barkov eventually had to accept that there was no shortcut back. His early rehab focused on basic movements, including simply lifting and straightening his right leg before progressing to walking and strength work.
“We had a good plan with our trainers and doctors,” Barkov said. “Pretty much, just come to the rink and they told me what I needed to do.”
Barkov finally stopped worrying about his knee
By late December, Barkov was cleared for light skating. Even that limited return mattered after months away from the ice and the Panthers' regular lineup.
“They didn't allow me to do too much,” Barkov said. “But it was great to be back on the ice and just touch the pucks and shoot some pucks.”
Missing the Olympics remained painful. Barkov called representing Finland his “dream,” but his comeback eventually gave him another international opportunity when he returned for the World Championship.
That tournament became an important mental checkpoint. Barkov wanted meaningful games before returning to NHL competition, and he left convinced the reconstructed knee could handle the workload.
“I proved to myself that I'm fine,” Barkov said. “I can play. I don't need to think about my knee, and everything feels fine.”
That confidence has carried straight into Panthers camp. Barkov is again skating with Sam Reinhart, and his first NHL action since the 2025 Cup Final included a breakaway goal against Carolina.
For Florida, the biggest development isn't the preseason goal. It's Barkov saying the fear surrounding his knee is gone after nearly a year of recovery.
