Hockey Hall of Fame forward Mark Messier had some harsh words for Connor Bedard after the Blackhawks loss today.

The Florida Panthers expanded their lead in the Atlantic Division today thanks to a 5-1 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks.

It was a game where Chicago was clearly outmatched as one would expect from the 31st place team playing a division leader.

One play during the game stood out to Hockey Hall of Famer Mark Messier, who was covering the game alongside PK Subban on ESPN.

Messier pointed to the second Panthers goal, which ended up being the game-winner as the game was tied 1-1 prior.

He specifically noted how Bedard was following his man, Sam Reinhart, to the front of the net, but didn't make much of an effort to tie up his stick.

This resulted in an easy tap-in for Reinhart as the puck came to him at the side of the net.

What really irked Messier about this play was the fact that Bedard was right back on the ice afterward as the Blackhawks drew a powerplay opportunity.

He said that Bedard needed to earn his ice time, saying that team morale takes a hit when players see others getting more of it even if they aren't putting in the hard work.

"There's no quicker way to destroy the morale of a team than to have players who don't earn their ice time."

This is not the first time Bedard has been criticized this season.

Former NHL referee Tim Peel called him out earlier this year, saying that he was not living up to expectations, especially compared to Sharks 1st overall pick Macklin Celebrini, who is a favorite to win the Calder this year.

That being said, Bedard is clearly Chicago's best player and it is not particularly close.

As such, it is hard to blame head coach Anders Sorensen for leaning on him as the team desperately attempts to take a step forward this season.
