Bruins cut 8 players as Don Sweeney reshapes the roster

Wyatt Bongiovanni is one of eight Boston Bruins prospects being sent down to Providence for AHL training camp.

The full list, reported Monday by Bruins insider Jack Studley, includes Luke Cavallin, Loke Johansson, Max Lundgren, Navrin Mutter, Tobie Paquette-Bisson, Kalle Vaisanen and Max Wanner.

None of these eight cracked the NHL lineup mix. Don Sweeney and his staff wanted a leaner group skating in Boston this week.

The Bruins won last night, 3-2 over the Capitals, and carry a one-game win streak into Tuesday's matchup with the Flyers.

Marco Sturm now has a tighter camp roster to evaluate before the regular season opener at home against the Rangers on September 29.

Sending eight players to Providence in one swoop isn't some shocking purge. Early camp always thins out fast, and none of these names forced the staff's hand this fall.

For a franchise still shaping its bottom six and depth pieces, this is more paperwork than upheaval. Plenty of camp bodies still remain in Boston.

Providence gets reinforcements before puck drop

Providence now has reinforcements before its own exhibition slate begins, with all eight expected to compete for regular spots down the stretch.

Cavallin heads to a crease battle in the AHL, while Vaisanen and Wanner add bodies to a blue line the Providence staff will lean on early.

Bongiovanni, Johansson, Lundgren, Mutter and Paquette-Bisson give the forward group extra depth heading into their own camp schedule.

Meanwhile Boston turns its attention to Tuesday night, when the Bruins host the Flyers looking to build on last night's result.

Final roster cuts are still coming before October. This batch of names might not be the last group Don Sweeney trims from Boston's camp.
