The PWHL could be heading toward its biggest Canadian broadcast move yet, with Hockey Night in Canada suddenly at the centre of serious speculation.
The league has scheduled a media event for Thursday at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto, promising what it has described as a major announcement.
Nothing has been confirmed publicly, but attention has quickly turned toward the PWHL's Canadian television plans and a possible partnership with CBC.
The timing is impossible to ignore. Sportsnet and CBC have ended the arrangement that kept NHL games on CBC's Saturday-night schedule, opening a major hole in Canadian hockey television.
Sportsnet will continue carrying Saturday NHL action under its own deal, while CBC has been moving toward a different sports programming strategy.
That creates an opening for the PWHL. A Saturday-night showcase tied to Hockey Night in Canada would immediately give the league a familiar national stage.
Hockey Night in Canada could get a new identity
Hockey Night in Canada dates back to 1952, making the brand deeply connected to generations of Canadian hockey fans. CBC continued airing NHL games even after Sportsnet took over the national rights.
Now that relationship has ended, the PWHL could offer CBC a way to keep its Saturday hockey tradition alive while putting women's professional hockey in a much larger spotlight.
The timing also lines up with another aggressive step for the league. The PWHL is moving into its fourth season after beginning play on January 1, 2024.
Detroit, Hamilton, Las Vegas and San Jose are joining for 2026-27, bringing the league to 12 teams after Seattle and Vancouver arrived one season earlier.
Broadcast reach is growing with the league. PWHL games were already available in Canada through TSN, RDS, CBC, Prime Video and Sportsnet last season.
The league has also secured a national U.S. television agreement with Scripps Sports for 2026-27, adding another piece to its expanding media footprint.
Thursday now carries some real intrigue. If the announcement connects the PWHL to Hockey Night in Canada, one of the country's oldest hockey brands would suddenly have a very different centerpiece.
Until the league makes its announcement, the CBC connection remains speculation. But with expansion accelerating and the Canadian broadcast picture changing fast, the opening is clearly there.
