Nikita Prishchepov is heading to the AHL as Jared Bednar and the Colorado Avalanche make one of their sharpest roster trims yet.
Colorado assigned Prishchepov, Cooper Gay and Maros Jedlicka to the Colorado Eagles on Wednesday, cutting three names from the NHL camp picture.
On paper, it is a routine September transaction. In practice, it is another sign that the Avalanche are moving quickly toward the group Bednar wants when the games begin.
Prishchepov is the name that jumps off the list. His assignment removes one young forward from the competition and tightens the race for the remaining jobs up front.

Gay is going down with him, while Jedlicka also heads to the Eagles. Three players leave the NHL roster at once, and the bubble gets smaller fast.
That is what makes this move worth watching. Colorado did not wait to drag every decision deep into camp before separating NHL options from AHL assignments.
Colorado's roster picture just got much tighter
For the players still in Denver, the message is simple without being said: every practice, preseason shift and special-teams look carries more weight now.
Bednar still has lineup decisions ahead, but Wednesday's move clears three bodies from the competition and gives the remaining group a cleaner runway to make its case.
Prishchepov's demotion is notable because young forwards often need only one strong camp stretch to force coaches into a tougher conversation. This time, Colorado made the call early enough to remove that suspense.
The Eagles now gain three players while the Avalanche move another step closer to their opening-night shape. That makes the next round of cuts harder to ignore.
And once a team reaches this stage of camp, every assignment starts pointing toward somebody else surviving. One door closes in Loveland while another player's NHL path gets wider.
Colorado did not make a blockbuster move Wednesday. But for Prishchepov, Gay, Jedlicka and every player still fighting for a sweater, this was a meaningful line in the sand.
