Nick Paul used World Mental Health Day to say what hockey rarely says out loud, hours before the Maple Leafs drop the puck in Colorado on Saturday night.

The Toronto forward didn't soften it, either. "Don't be afraid to talk to somebody," he said in a message shared by the NHLPA.

Then came the line that sticks. "I always thought that people would judge me or have this opinion of me, but that wasn't the reality."

Read that again. A 31-year-old veteran wearing No. 20 in hockey's most scrutinized market admitted he once feared being judged.

This is a sport where players block slap shots with their ankles and finish the shift. Asking for help has been treated like a ticket to the press box.

And frankly, that culture was a bad one. Every player who says this on the record makes the next kid's phone call a little easier.

Talk to someone, he said, and "you might create a connection with someone who is also going through their own struggles."

Avalanche test a Leafs team still hunting for traction

So what happens once the message is out? Toronto still has a hockey game tonight, and the start hasn't given anyone much breathing room.

The Leafs sit 2-2-1 through five games. Their goal differential is -1, a polite way of saying nothing has been settled yet.

Thursday's 4-3 shootout loss in Vegas came in Toronto's first road game of the season. One point, plenty of questions.

Colorado is a nasty place to go looking for answers. The Avalanche are 3-1-0 and just hung a 7-3 win on Calgary.

That +12 goal differential through four games should worry a Toronto crease that hasn't found its footing.

Anthony Stolarz carries a .904 save percentage. Sergei Bobrovsky isn't far off at .906, and neither number scares anybody.

Paul's own start has been quiet. He has a goal and an assist so far and went minus-3 across those five games.

His $3,150,000 cap hit tells you who's expected to carry the scoring in Toronto. Auston Matthews and William Nylander have 6 points apiece.

Jim Hiller, in his first season running the Toronto bench, has this group on a two-game road trip that continues in Utah on Tuesday.

Tonight is the first of two meetings with the Avalanche this season. Whether Toronto can keep pace with that attack is a question five games haven't come close to answering.
