Easton Cowan has earned Jim Hiller's trust, but Toronto Maple Leafs general manager John Chayka just left the door open to trading him.
Speaking Monday, Chayka addressed whether Cowan had become untouchable in Toronto, and his response gave Maple Leafs fans something to think about.
"I don't think any player is untradeable, but he's a good player," Chayka said, making it clear that even Toronto's promising young forward isn't completely off the table.
The general manager praised Cowan's commitment, describing a player who loves the organization, works relentlessly and brings the kind of complete game Toronto wants.
"He's everything you'd want at Toronto Maple Leaf," Chayka added, highlighting Cowan's passion, extra work in the gym and dedication on the ice.

But the real concern came when Chayka was asked whether he'd consider another major in-season trade similar to the Matthew Knies deal involving Kirill Marchenko. His answer was simple: "Yeah."
John Chayka leaves Easton Cowan's future uncertain
That response carries weight considering Toronto already moved Knies, a young forward many fans expected to remain part of the organization's long-term core.
Cowan has been earning opportunities alongside Auston Matthews and Jack Roslovic, giving the Maple Leafs another young option capable of contributing in their top six.
For Hiller, Cowan offers energy, defensive responsibility and offensive upside. Trading that combination would create another significant decision for Toronto's coaching staff.
Chayka's comments don't mean negotiations involving Cowan are underway. They do confirm the general manager isn't prepared to publicly declare him unavailable.
That's an uncomfortable position for supporters who watched the organization sacrifice Knies to reshape its forward group before the season.
The Maple Leafs are clearly trying to win now, and Chayka has shown he's willing to make aggressive roster decisions rather than protect every young asset.
For Cowan, the message is unmistakable. His play has impressed management, but even that might not guarantee his future in Toronto if another major opportunity presents itself.
Should the Toronto Maple Leafs declare Easton Cowan untouchable in trade discussions?
