Ridly Greig is heading to a Department of Player Safety hearing on May 4, and the discipline could roll right into next October for the Ottawa Senators winger.

The 23-year-old got the call this afternoon. The hearing is scheduled for Monday and the charge is roughing on Carolina's Sean Walker.

The clip already lit up social before the league weighed in.

Here's the wrinkle. Ottawa was swept by Carolina 4-0 in the opening round. Game 4 ended 4-2 on Saturday in Ottawa.

The Senators don't have any more 2026 games to suspend Greig from.

That means any banned games carry over to the start of next season. A guy with a $3.25 million cap hit just put his October availability in the league's hands.

Greig finished the regular season with 35 points in 77 games and a +12 rating. He had 1 assist in 4 playoff games.

The numbers are fine. The reputation is the issue.

This is the same player the league has watched for years. The line he walks between competitive edge and dirty hits keeps getting thinner. Travis Green has defended him publicly more than once.

Walker plays a $3.6 million depth role for the Hurricanes. The Carolina defenseman went +4 in the series and chipped in an assist. Brind'Amour's group is rolling toward round two regardless.

What the suspension carryover actually means in Ottawa

Steve Staios is staring down an offseason where his most physical winger could miss the season opener.

That's not a small piece for a Senators bottom six that finished 9th overall but went out in four games.

Greig's hearing on a non-playing date is the league's way of saying this isn't a maximum five-game review.

The Department of Player Safety reserves in-person hearings for anything more than five.

The phone hearing on May 4 caps the discipline at five games.

Best case for Ottawa, the league hands down a fine and Greig skates next October free and clear.

Worst case, he's watching the first week of next season from the press box. That's the bet Senators fans are making this morning.

Brady Tkachuk went pointless across all four games with a -4 rating.

Drake Batherson had 4 points but finished -3. Thomas Chabot was -6 on the back end. The series wasn't lost on Greig's roughing minor.

The bigger Ottawa story is a team that finished 99 points in the regular season and got swept anyway. The hearing is the postscript on a series Ottawa never controlled.

May 4 is the next time anyone wearing a Sens jersey makes news. That's the kind of offseason that demands a phone call from the head coach.
