Gabriel Landeskog, captain of the Colorado Avalanche who hasn't played since 2022, has reportedly had a setback which may have huge consequences for his NHL career.

As if the Colorado Avalanche needed more bad news on the injury front in the 2024-25 regular season, there comes an absolute stunner for the team. Gabriel Landeskog, who hasn't played since winning a Stanley Cup with the Avalanche in 2022, has suffered a setback in his attempted return to the NHL.

The report originates with reporter Adrian Dater, who called the the setback significant, and possibly career-ending.

"From two trusted sources: Landeskog setback was 'significant'. A return at all is in real question. I hope this turns out to be WRONG. He doesn't deserve this."

Later on, Colorado Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar attempted to downplay what happened, saying the setback is part of the process and he's still hopeful Landeskog can make his return this season.

Hopeful or not, Gabriel Landeskog was initially supposed to miss just 12 weeks or so of the 2023-24 NHL regular season after undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery. He ended up missing it all after having a knee cartilage transplant, and has yet to even skate with the Colorado Avalanche since he had that surgery, although he has skated on his own.

At 31 years of age, Gabriel Landeskog still has some time to make an eventual NHL return, but the longer it takes to get there, the less likely it is to ever happen. Neither of the two surgeries was minor. Meanwhile, the Colorado Avalanche did recently get some good news on Valeri Nichushkin, who's return date after his arrest in Seattle has finally been revealed. At the same time, star defenceman Cale Makar is dealing with an injury, with the team recently releasing a concerning update on his status. It's been a brutal year on the injury front for the Colorado Avalanche, and they have a ways to go to yet to get out of the woods entirely.
