An NHL executive has sent shockwaves through the hockey world, as he announced that Brad Marchand could possibly be traded by the Boston Bruins.

Brad Marchand sits fifth all-time with 966 points in franchise history for the Boston Bruins.

Unless the situation drastically changes, the captain should pass 1,000 early in the 2025-26 season and may even jump Phil Esposito at 1,012 to fourth behind his former captain Patrice Bergeron at 1,040.

Whether he reaches those milestones is open to question, of course. The Bruins are struggling compared to expectations, with just 54 points and the Eastern Conference's second-worst goal differential.

Brad Marchand could be traded per NHL executive

Their big, $54.25-million offseason pickup, Elias Lindholm, is a third-line center. As the March 7 trade deadline draws near, the Bruins might have to do something they'd likely rather not do: move Marchand as part of a possible rebuild.

«If they think it'll help the team,» one hockey operations executive, granted anonymity to discuss a player not under his team's control, said when asked if the Bruins will trade Marchand. «All bets are off.»

Dealing away Marchand would be unpopular. He's near the top of his team in scoring and he's still a major presence on and off the ice.

It would be a white flag in the team's dressing room if he was shipped away, at least, similar to Harry Sinden trading Ray Bourque in 2000.

But at 36, Marchand's physical, high-intensity playing style and injury history have to make you wonder about his longevity.

His play has leveled off, with interim coach Joe Sacco even benching him for overtime in a recent loss to Ottawa. Trading Marchand might be best for both his and the team's future.
