Owen Tippett mocks Crosby on a puck with Philly up 3-0
Owen Tippett signed a fan's puck with a two-word shot at Sidney Crosby this week, and the image went viral fast heading into Game 4 of the Flyers-Penguins playoff series tonight.
The clip, originally posted on X by @JillRice94, shows a fan holding up a puck with the message written in marker, the text "Thanks Tippett" overlaid on the screen.
Six thousand likes on Instagram within hours. Most of the top comments weren't cheering him on.
One commenter put it plainly: "That's not a polite way to talk about your team's owner." Another went further: "Owen, buddy... who do you think you are, let's be real here."
Fan banter is part of hockey culture. Always has been. But grabbing the marker yourself is a different thing entirely.
Tippett is 27 years old, earning $6.2 million this season. That's a veteran NHL forward who's been around long enough to know where the line is.
Tippett's chirp lands while Crosby goes quiet in this series
The awkward reality is this: the off-ice noise is actually the least of Pittsburgh's problems right now. Crosby has been held scoreless through three playoff games, picking up just one assist while going -3 in the series.
Tippett, meanwhile, has 2 points in those same three games at +3. Including a shorthanded assist. The guy doing the chirping is outperforming the guy he's chirping at, at least on the score sheet.
Goalie Daniel Vladar has been close to perfect for Philadelphia, going 3-0 in the series with a .946 save percentage and one shutout.
The Flyers finished the regular season at 43-27-12. Pittsburgh matched them at 98 points but got here riding a three-game losing streak, and nothing has changed since puck drop of Game 1.
Philadelphia has won all three games. Tonight at 8:00 PM ET, they go for the sweep on home ice.
Whether Tippett's puck signing becomes a harmless footnote or something the Pittsburgh locker room remembers for years depends entirely on what happens tonight.
The Penguins are not out of answers yet. But they're running low on games to find them.
