That is the real takeaway from the latest update around the Leafs' hockey operations hunt. Toronto may have trimmed the board, but it has not finished the job.
John Chayka and Scott White remain in the mix as the favorites for the Head of Hockey Operations position. Evan Gold and Ryan Martin are no longer being considered.
That already says plenty about where the process stands. The Leafs are no longer sorting through a giant pile of names. They are moving closer to a smaller, more serious lane.
Still, the wording around Chayka matters. The organization is said to be leaning that way, but nothing is expected to be finalized this week or over the weekend.
That keeps White very much alive in this race. And in Toronto, a search that is not done is a search that can still turn fast.
The other piece hanging over all of it is Matthews. His future is said to be a major part of these talks, and right now the Leafs do not appear to have a firm read on how he feels.
-
That is what makes this search bigger than a front-office hire. Matthews is not just another part of the conversation. He may be the conversation.
One detail in the report jumps hard. Some around the process are said to be unsure whether candidates are asking about Matthews because they want clarity before taking the job, or because their current teams want to know if he could ever be available.
That is a massive layer for Toronto. When the franchise player becomes part of the background check on a job, the organization is no longer only selling authority and vision.
It is also selling stability. And right now, that sounds a little less certain than the Leafs would probably like.
There is another name worth watching too. Mats Sundin's possible role continues to draw interest, and there is a real question about whether his involvement could grow into something more meaningful than a simple advisory spot.
That matters because Toronto told candidates this is for a single Head of Hockey Operations hire. In other words, the Leafs are not building a broad committee. They are trying to make one major call.
So this search is not just about Chayka or White. It is about who gets the chair, what Matthews wants, and whether Sundin could still end up closer to the real center of the room than people expect.
